NASA told to holdup a ride if heading for space

NASA has been ordered to save money by hiring ''space taxis'' from the private sector below White House budget plans.

In a radical redirection of America's space program, President Mr. Barack Obama has deserted the $US100 billion moon project, in its place turning over transportation to commercial companies.

His proposals must be approved by Congress and a few politicians, particularly those whose constituents benefited from NASA spending, have promised to battle them.

Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama, which is home to Marshall Space Flight Centre, said Mr. Obama's plans were the commencement of the ''death march for the future of US human space flight''.

Under the White House plan, the $US4 billion spent every year by NASA on manned space exploration will instead be invest in rocket technology, counting in-orbit refueling.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic is developing sub-orbital space flight, as are quite a few US companies. After the next 5 space shuttle flights, NASA will have to holdup rides to the International Space Station (ISS) on Russian rockets.
