NASA: Mars Craters Up Close

NASA has unveiled an image of the Mojave Crater on Mars by fusing together different high resolution images.

The Mojave crater, which is around 10 million years old and almost 37 miles across, is situated in the Xanthe Terra region of Mars.

The images are part of the NASA High Resolution Imagine Science Experiment (HiRise) where an assembly of images as well as data sent back from the HiRise telescope is translated into the visible human spectrum.

According to NASA, these models show only relative changes in elevation in place of absolute numerical data. They are also used for creating perspective views from whichever angle in movies.

The depth of the Mojave crater is around 1.6 miles, with the sides much less steep than pictured over. The images are exaggerated in terms of scale in the HiRise process.
