NASA's Recovery Act Information



NASA will be working with Congress and the Office of Management and Budget to finalize its Recovery plans in 2009. As these plans are approved and they are implemented,

Science: - $400,000,000
  • To accelerate the development of the Tier 1 set of Earth Science climate research missions recommended by the National Academies Decadal Survey.
  • To increase the agency's supercomputing capabilities.
Exploration: - $400,000,000
  • To improve NASA's ability to maintain the March 2015 initial operational capability date for the Ares-1 and Orion projects and to retain and/or increase the number of jobs, particularly in engineering, analysis, design, and research.
  • To stimulate efforts within the private sector to develop and demonstrate human spaceflight capabilities and to foster entrepreneurial activity leading to job growth in engineering, analysis , design, research, and to economic growth as capabilities for new markets are created.
Aeronautics: - $150,000,000
  • To undertake systems-level research, development and demonstration activities related to:
a) aviation safety.
b) environmental impact mitigation.
c) Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).

Cross-Agency Support: - $50,000,000
  • To restore NASA-owned facilities damaged from hurricanes and other natural disasters occurring during calendar year 2008.
