NASA fellowship and honors the UNL student David Peterson

-->The University of Nebraska-Lincoln had announced on Wednesday, 5th August of 2009, that a geosciences graduate student has received a prestigious fellowship from NASA which is ready to fund three years of doctoral research to David Peterson.

David Peterson's NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship are worth $90,000 and will allow him to continue his research into wildfires. During his fellowship, Peterson will be allowed to use satellite images provided by NASA to study fires caused by dry lightning strikes, in an effort to improve overall forecasting of fire weather.

David's further researches will provide a valuable insight into a critical field, said his adviser, Jun Wang, an assistant geosciences professor. Fires emit carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and carbon monoxide, a pollutant which affects the clouds, the air we breathe and even visibility on the highway. So the way to monitor the fires in a timely fashion, and how can we forecast the potential danger of the fire will come under David's research providing a valuable information.

The NASA’s Earth and Space Science Fellowships are available in earth science, heliophysics, planetary science and astrophysics which are highly competitive. Only 98 proposals will be funded from an applicant group among 439.
